WHY IS THE PORTUGUESE PARLIAMENT DIVIDED OVER MOZAMBIQUE?
The Parliament approved this Friday a resolution proposed by the Liberal Initiative, recommending that the Portuguese government not recognize the election results in Mozambique:
- Meanwhile, and indeed, at the very least, the position of Portugal’s right-wing parties is scandalous: the PSD (center-right) and the CDS (conservative right), alongside the PS (Socialist Party), abstained. Unsurprisingly, of course, the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) immediately voted against it.
- The liberals’ proposal was approved by a coalition that brought together the majority of parties with lesser parliamentary representation.
- And here lies another surprise: the Left Bloc (BE) voted alongside CHEGA, the Liberal Initiative (IL), and PAN in favor of the resolution.
- In other words, it was BE and PAN, both left-wing parties, condemning the electoral fraud committed by an African left-wing party, Frelimo.
- The approved text recommends that the Portuguese government "not recognize the fraudulent results of the presidential, legislative, and provincial elections of October 9, 2024, announced by the National Electoral Commission (CNE) and subsequently validated by the Constitutional Council (CC)."
- Furthermore, it calls on the Portuguese government to “publicly condemn the violent repression against peaceful demonstrators, including the use of lethal force and arbitrary detention of citizens.”
- Nevertheless, for obvious reasons, the right-wing (PSD and CDS) joined forces with the Portuguese socialists and communists to support the Mozambican communists - curious!
- Regarding the now-approved resolution, also for obvious reasons, the Portuguese government will neither condemn the violence in Mozambique nor hesitate to recognize the victory of the Mozambican communists.
- The remaining question is: how can an opponent like Venâncio Mondlane convince the international community without relinquishing Mozambique’s gas?
